Seventy Years Is About All a Silver Maple Gets
The houses on Pawnee Drive went up between 1954 and 1958, and somebody put a silver maple in most of these yards within a season or two of the slab going down. Silver maple is a fast, generous, short-lived tree, and seventy years is roughly the whole story. What that means on the ground right now is a lot of Indian Hills yards with one enormous stump in them and a homeowner who did not budget for it.
The part that catches people out is where the stump sits. These are basement houses, walk-out and daylight both, and the tree was usually planted close enough to shade the house. Seven decades later the root plate has run right up against the block, and there are yards on North Pawnee Drive where you can see the wall the roots are pressed into.
So the question stops being how big the stump is and becomes how close to that wall a wheel can safely go. It is worth answering before anybody starts swinging a machine at it.
How Close We Will Grind to an Exposed Basement Wall
On a walk-out wall we work to within about a foot of the block with the machine and finish the last stretch by hand, cutting the heavy roots with an axe and a reciprocating saw rather than running a cutting wheel against a footing. Concrete block from the mid-fifties is not reinforced the way a modern wall is and it does not need the vibration.
That hand work is why a foundation-side stump takes longer than the same tree out in the open, and we say so when we quote it. The alternative some outfits use is to grind whatever they can reach and leave a shelf of root running under the wall, which is fine until it rots out in six years and the fill above it drops.

Deep Lots, Long Walks
The average lot in here runs about two-thirds of an acre, which by Springfield standards is a great deal of ground, and the useful part of that is room. A tracked machine can normally come in off the driveway, cross the side yard and work without anything being carried, which keeps the price at the honest end of the range.
The cost of a deep lot is the trip back with the material. A big maple produces a surprising heap, two or three times what the stump looks like it should, and on a lot this size most people would rather have it raked into a back corner or spread along the old fencerow than pay to see it leave. That takes the haul-off line off the invoice entirely.
Because these lots were cut out of farm ground, there are still eastern red cedars standing in those old fence lines. They grind quickly, price low, and people usually add a couple to the ticket once a machine is already on the property.

Water oak is the second call. It puts out a broad flat plate of surface roots that a mower deck has been scalping for years, so the stump is only the middle of a much wider problem. Pin oak turns up too, mostly over toward Joyce Lane, and it holds on longer than the maples do.
One thing worth saying about silver maple specifically: it sprouts. Cut one at ground level and leave it and you will have a thicket of shoots off the stump and the shallow roots by the second summer. Grinding takes care of anything coming from the trunk. If the tree was already sending shoots up out in the lawn, expect to knock those back a couple of times before they give up.

My maple is about four feet from the basement wall. Is that too close to grind?
Four feet is workable. We can get the machine within roughly a foot of exposed block and finish the rest by hand, so you would end up with the stump gone and the last few inches of root beside the wall cut rather than ground. Under two feet is where we start describing what stays. Send a photo taken from the side so we can see the wall and the stump in the same frame.
The mower keeps scalping roots all around the stump. Can those come out too?
Yes, and on an old silver maple they usually should, because the surface roots run out fifteen or twenty feet and they are what makes that part of the yard unmowable. It is quoted separately from the stump since it is measured by area rather than diameter. Where a root runs toward a living tree you want to keep, we leave it, and we will point out which ones those are.
Can I keep the material in the back rather than pay to have it hauled?
On a lot this size, absolutely, and most people here do. A mature maple will cover a patch fifteen feet across ankle-deep, so pick somewhere it can settle without bothering you, usually the fence line or under an existing tree. It rots down over a couple of seasons. Do not pile it against a wooden shed or a fence post.
How long does a stump that size actually take?
A thirty-inch silver maple out in open lawn is around ninety minutes of grinding plus setup and rake-out, so call it half a morning on site. Put that same stump against a basement wall with hand work on one side and it runs closer to three hours. Access, not diameter, is what makes a Springfield job long.
There is an old cedar in the fence line I would like gone at the same time. Cheaper?
Considerably. The trailer, the drive out and the setup are all paid for by the first stump, so a cedar added to the same visit is priced on the grinding alone. Cedar is soft, quick wood anyway. Two or three of them on a fencerow together often comes to less than one mature maple.
